| PREPARING FOR SOD
Timing
& Soil Prep
Turf can be planted anytime
during the growing season from as soon as the ground can be worked in
the spring until freeze-up in the fall provided watering facilities are
available. Turf planted during the month of July may require more attention
than other periods of the growing season because of the hotter weather.
However this problem is minimized if watering is possible. The area where
the turf is to be planted should have a minimum of 4" of good quality
top soil. It should be firmly compacted and as smooth as possible. Compaction
should be firmer than for seeding. This helps avoid leaving footprints
in the
planted area. It is advisable not to water the area just prior to planting.
After planting the turf should be watered adequately so as to moisten
the sub-soil and then rolled. This will not only level off the new turf
area but encourages faster establishment of the new turf. For summer planting,
fertilizer applications should be light so as to prevent succulent growth
that can be easily damaged during high temperature.

The soil should be rototilled to a depth of 4”.
Good base preparation is essential.

The soil should be smoothed by raking and then
firmed but lightly rolling. Fill in any low spots.
These are recommended steps.
Many lawns are installed with little or no preparation and turn out very
well. It all depends on your site’s condition and your personal
preference.
